Asus has revealed the release date for the Rog Ally, its upcoming competitor for the Steam Deck, and it'll be out soon. In a press release, Asus confirmed that the Rog Ally will be out May 11.

Initially revealed in what appeared to be an April Fool's joke, the Rog Ally was subsequently confirmed to be real. Its main advantage of Valve's handheld is its 7-inch screen, which supports resolution of up with 1080p at 120hz. Its fan is also significantly quieter than the Steam Deck, running some 17 decibels lower than its competitor.

In its release, Asus touts the Rog Ally's ability to run Windows 11, a significant issue for the Steam Deck, which it calls a "seamless experience" through either the platform's joysticks or touchscreen. A specifial edition of Armoury Crate — an integration app for Rog devices — with include quick performance mode toggles, in-game monitoring software, and other tools.

Under the hood, the Rog Ally will feature a purpose-built AMD Ryzen Z1 series processor with a RDNA 3 GPU. The six-core, 12-thread processor is similar to one used in premium laptops.

Details regarding pricing have not been released, but Asus has promised to reveal it during a Rog Ally launch event. An ASUS rep told PC Gamer, "I can tell you for sure that the price will be below $1,000. 200% it will be below $1,000."

For comparison, the 512GB version of the Steam Deck is currently available for $649.

The Rog Ally is part of a recent wave of premium handhelds that includes the Steam Deck and other devices. Its reception will be worth watching when it releases next month, as it will say a lot about the viability of this market going forward.
