This Day in Gaming 🎂
In retro news, I'm breaking out the birthday fairy bread for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, the 25-year-old classic that inspired me to get outside and kick-push for reals. This Y2K sequel didn't simply scoop up a Nokia 3310 and phone it in; this blew minds with bigger levels, gnarlier tricks, and the addition of manuals that let you link monster combos like never before.
I still remember huddling around a CRT with mates, trading the controller back and forth as we tried to outdo each other's score runs in "School II". Obviously, the soundtrack became the anthem of a generation, too, and the create-a-skater mode let us inject our own flavour into a sport we had no IRL skills in. Truly, this was a cultural detonation that cemented a soon-to-be sprawling empire that's still going strong today.

Aussie birthdays for notable games.

Nice Savings for Nintendo Switch
On Switch, Super Mario Party Jamboree has the kind of minigame chaos that has destroyed friendships since the N64 era. Fun fact: Nintendo originally tested Mario Party prototypes on actual board games before coding anything. Persona 5 Tactica also deserves attention, shrinking Atlus' beloved RPG world into clever grid-based battles. Its chibi art style was a deliberate pivot to attract new fans who might be scared off by the 100-hour epics.
- Super Mario Party Jamboree (-27%) – A$58 – Party antics at their best with returning and new minigames.
- Persona 5 Tactica (-74%) – A$24.20 – Lowest ever for Atlus’ tactical spin-off.
- Sonic Forces (-49%) – A$30.50 – A divisive but cheap blue blur entry.
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (-20%) – A$64 – The must-have kart racer that's still totally worth it.
- Minecraft (-15%) – A$34 – Bedrock classic must-own on a modest discount.

Exciting Bargains for Xbox
Over on Series X, Kingdom Come II Gold is looking strong, built on CryEngine for even more historical authenticity than its predecessor. The studio actually consulted historians to ensure you are eating, dressing and fighting exactly like a 15th-century Czech. Resident Evil 4, meanwhile, needs no introduction. What blew my mind was learning that the famous chainsaw enemy was inspired by producer Shinji Mikami's fear of masked slashers in European horror films.
- Kingdom Come II Gold (-39%) – A$88 – Ambitious medieval sequel at a fresh discount.
- Resident Evil 4 (-44%) – A$33.40 – The survival horror GOAT remade and now half price.
- Split Fiction (-37%) – A$44 – Story-driven experiment for those chasing co-op originality.
- Maneater (-54%) – A$27.50 – Shark RPG silliness at its cheapest.
- Metaphor: ReFantazio (-45%) – A$63.20 – Atlus’ killer fantasy RPG discounted and demanding to be played.
Xbox One
- Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 (-65%) – A$24.50 – Classic skater remake combo, dirt cheap.
- Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (-50%) – A$34.80 – Castlevania-inspired RPG at its lowest price.
- AC Valhalla (-56%) – A$43.70 – Viking epic at a hefty discount.

PS5 players should not ignore Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza, a spin-off that takes Kazuma Kiryu's spirit and sails it straight into the Pacific. The devs confirmed they even scanned traditional Okinawan dance moves for accuracy. Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition is now the definitive way to play. Fun trivia: Keanu Reeves loved the project so much that CD Projekt extended Johnny Silverhand's role once he signed on.

On PC, Tomb Raider: Def. Survivor Trilogy is a no-brainer if you missed Lara's modern origin arc. Meanwhile, Viewfinder is the other standout, a puzzle game where photographs reshape the world. The core mechanic came from a university project that wowed indie showcases long before release.
