It turns out Lords of the Fallen's final 1.5 update released in April 2024 wasn't the final update at all as developer Hexworks has released the Clash of Champions downloadable content which adds a boss rush mode to the game.

As reported by Gematsu, the surprise release doesn't include just one version of the boss rush mode but two. Players can choose to either fight through the Echoes of Battle or Crucible modes, with the former offering a chance to relive boss encounters and the latter presenting a unique new challenging of increasing difficulty.

"The update features two previously unannounced boss rush modes for the dark fantasy action RPG," publisher CI Games said. "Players can now replay singular boss battles with previously vanquished foes or confront them sequentially in one of several grueling trials. Both modes are playable either in single player or with a fellow Lampbearer in online cooperative multiplayer. The update also includes additional performance improvements."

Players can find the modes through Lords of the Fallen's Vestige checkpoint markers, and conquering the Crucible mode unlocks rewards including Shrine Currency and exclusive new armor tincts.

"We’re delighted to welcome the many new players exploring Lords of the Fallen‘s dual worlds for the very first time thanks to the game’s addition to the incredible Game Pass library," said Hexworks executive producer and head of studio Saul Gascon.

"We’re extremely excited to greet this new wave of Lampbearers with the surprise release of our Clash of Champions update, which includes the all-new Boss Rush modes as requested by our community. These new additions further add to the extensive gameplay variety Lords of the Fallen already offers, especially following the recent inclusion of the Advanced Game Modifier System."

Lords of the Fallen, a reboot/sequel to the 2014 Souls-like of the same name, launched in October 2023 to strong critical and commercial reception, selling one million copies in its first 10 days on sale. In our 8/10 review, IGN said: "Lords of the Fallen is an awesome Souls-like with a fantastic dual-realities premise, even when performance shortcomings and wimpy bosses crash the party."
