Marvel's Secret Invasion has got fans questioning what they can and cannot trust about the latest MCU series, with some believing the first episode's shock ending is out to trick them.

Secret Invasion premiered on Disney+ on June 21, and the first episode gave viewers a taste of the twists and turns that will likely follow in the remaining episodes. Episode 1 ended on a very dark note, with Nick Fury, Maria Hill, and Talos failing to prevent a terrorist bombing in Russia.

Proceed with caution! You're about to enter major spoiler territory.

Hill herself is killed by Gravik during the attack, leaving Fury's dwindling list of allies even smaller than it was before. The death of the legendary character left viewers in a state of shock, and many took to social media to share their heartbreak and dismay over the loss.

Others are treading carefully and trying not to lose sight of the main conflict between Fury and the Skrulls that have infiltrated Earth. The episode sows paranoia about the shapeshifting alien race into its story, and people are already trying to untangle those threads of deception.

One Reddit user suggested viewers are being fooled and presented evidence Hill may still be alive. Suspicions seemingly arose from the fact that the camera faded to black during Hill's presumed death. Yet, earlier in the episode, we saw a Skrull impersonating former CIA Agent Everett Ross return to their natural form during their death.

The post shared several reasons to support the theory a Skrull was imitating Hill at the time of her death, including a visual cue that saw Hill wearing glasses in some scenes and not wearing glasses in others to differentiate between the real Hill and the Skrull version, along with some coded dialogue between Fury and Hill in the episode's bar scene.

"The scene in the bar is really dubious. Why on earth would Fury and Hill meet in a bar instead of in their base?" the Redditor quizzed. "My guess: because they know they're being followed, so they want to avoid leading those Skrulls back to their base. At first glance, their conversation seems casual enough, but I started wondering if they were speaking in codes."

The author concludes that "the Hill that was shot was actually Soren instead," based on the fact we didn't witness the death of Talos' wife, and not seeing a body could mean she wasn't dead. However, other viewers think the murdered Hill is a Life-Model Decoy, or LMD.

The Secret Invasion comics changed the superhero landscape forever. The 2008 story arc by Brian Michael Bendis and Leinil Francis Yu revealed certain Marvel heroes were replaced by alien doppelgangers, causing readers to question everything they knew about them.

However, the Secret Invasion TV show only shares its basic premise in common with the comic book source material. Marvel even instructed director Ali Selim to not read the comics before making the show, so we will have to see how it all plays out across the series.

The second episode of Secret Invasion will drop on Disney+ on June 28.
