Bard, Google's experimental tool that allows users to collaborate with generative AI in a way similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT, has removed its waitlist process and is now welcoming users from over 180 countries to try it out.

The news was announced at Google I/O 2023 alongside the confirmation that Bard is now available in Japanese and Korean. Furthermore, Google is planning on supporting 40 languages in the near future and will be expanding access to Bard in even more countries and territories.

Google also revealed some new updates for Bard, including that it will soon become a more visual experience. On Google’s blog, it gave an example of a user asking, “What are some must-see sights in New Orleans?” In response, you’ll get a list of New Orleans' top spots to visit alongside images to get an idea of what they look like.

You’ll also be able to upload images alongside text when asking Bard to do something. This means you can upload images of your dogs and can tell Bard to “write a funny caption of these two.” By using Google Lens, the AI tool will “analyze the photo, detect the dogs’ breeds, and draft a few creative captions — all within seconds”

Bard is a great tool for coding as well, and new updates will make it even more so. From source citations that will let you know exactly where certain code is coming from to a dark theme to an “Export” button that will let you “export and run code with our partner Replit, starting with Python,” Google is focusing on making this the best experience possible for its users.

Bard will also be able to draft e-mails and documents for you, and you’ll be able to export those right to Gmail and Docs so you can send out something important or get a headstart on a project you are working on.

Lastly, Bard will be able to interact with a ton of other apps and services, including Adobe Firefly. With this functionality, users can quickly turn an idea into an image that will serve their purposes.

“Let’s say I’m planning a birthday party for my 7-year-old who loves unicorns, and I want a fun image to send out with the invitations,” Google’s Sissie Hsiao wrote. “All I have to do is ask Bard: ‘Make an image of a unicorn and a cake at a kids party’ — and it’ll generate an image within seconds, all while adhering to Adobe’s high standards for quality and ethical responsibility.”

This is only the beginning for Bard, and the future will bring connections with even more partners like Kayak, OpenTable, ZipRecruiter, Instacart, Wolfram, and Khan Academy.

The AI race is picking up steam, as Microsoft recently invested $10 billion in ChatGPT maker OpenAI and released new versions of both Bing and Edge search engine that uses the AI tech ChatGPT does.
