Paramount Pictures presented 20 minutes of intense, action-packed footage from Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Part One at CinemaCon 2023 on Thursday. Just when you think this franchise can’t top itself with crazy stunts and action sequences this footage showed that it can.

The sequence is set in Rome and starts with Hayley Atwell’s mysterious character, Grace, being interrogated by Italian authorities. She’s been caught with multiple passports but claims she’s just a teacher on holiday. Of course, she’s lying. She eventually ends up in a room with Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt where it’s revealed that she’s a master thief who was sent on a job by an unknown client to steal a “key,” a MacGuffin she slipped onto the person of an unsuspecting civilian she met on a plane.
Various parties are after the key, including Ethan as well as Esai Morales and his goons as well as Pom Klementieff’s relentless killer. Then there’s Shea Whigham and Greg Tarzan Davis’ agent characters who are after Ethan so, yeah, lots of players to track here.
Grace causes a distraction at police headquarters that allows her to escape from Ethan, who nevertheless pursues her. Each steals police vehicles and Ethan chases her through the streets of Rome. But they soon end up literally handcuffed to one another (a nice homage to the Hitchcock thriller The 39 Steps) during a standoff with Whigham and Davis as well as Klementieff, who slays a bunch of police officers in the process. Ethan and Grace escape during the gun battle but are quickly pursued by both parties.
The sequence makes great use of Ethan and Grace being handcuffed to each other, with the characters taking turns driving as they end up swapping vehicles, eventually ending up in a ridiculously tiny but zippy yellow Fiat 500. The tiny Fiat versus Klementieff’s massive armored vehicle makes for the car chase equivalent of David battling Goliath. Klementieff’s assassin seems to particularly enjoy all the chaos and destruction she’s been able to wreak during the chase. The footage ended just as it looked like Ethan and Grace were done for.
In addition to the aforementioned cast members, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Part One also stars Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Mariela Garriga, Henry Czerny, Charles Parnell, Frederick Schmidt, Rob Delaney, Cary Elwes, Indira Varma, and Mark Gatiss. Christopher McQuarrie returns as writer-director.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Part One now opens two days earlier on July 12th.
