2023 marks the 40th anniversary of Return of the Jedi, which means it's also been 40 years since Marvel Comics released its adaptation of that Star Wars sequel. To mark the occasion, Marvel has revealed a new series of variant covers inspired by the iconic Return of the Jedi Adaptation cover art.
Head to the slideshow gallery below for a look at Jerry Ordway's four covers in this new set, along with the four classic Return of the Jedi covers by Bill Sienkiewicz:
Dubbed "Classic Trade Dress Variant Covers," these images are meant to evoke both the composition and trade dress of the original Return of the Jedi comics from 1983. It makes sense that Marvel would turn to Ordway to handle these covers, as Ordway famously adapted 1989's Batman in photorealistic detail in Batman: The Official Movie Adaptation. Colorist Nolan Woodward takes the homage a step further by limiting himself to only colors that were available in 1983.
The key difference between these new covers and the old is that Marvel's current crop of Star Wars comics is mainly set in between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. That doesn't look to be changing just yet, so the covers showcase post-Episode V mainstays like Luke Skywalker, Doctor Aphra, Lando Calrissian, Princess Leia, Darth Vader and Beilert Valance.
These variant covers will appear on the following comics being published in July 2023:
- Star Wars #36 (July 5)
- Star Wars: Bounty Hunters #36 (July 12)
- Star Wars: Darth Vader #36 (July 12)
- Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #34
