Tron: Ares, the third film in the Tron franchise following 2010's Tron: Legacy, is set to move forward at Disney with Jared Leto as its star. Furthermore, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell no Tales' Joachim Rønning is in early talks to direct.
As reported by Deadline, the team behind Tron: Ares is currently planning to start production in August 2023 in Vancouver, and the film's crew is currently being assembled. No deals are complete yet, but this would mark the fourth time Rønning and Disney would team up. Most recently, the director wrapped filming on Disney+'s Young Woman and the Sea, which stars Daisy Ridley.
Tron: Ares will have its script written by The Prince's Jesse Wigutow and will serve as a sequel to the Top Gun: Maverick's Joe Kosinski-directed Tron: Legacy. Sean Bailey and Sam Dickerman will serve as executive producers and Justin Springo, Jared Leto, Jeffrey Silver, and Leto's Paradox partner Emma Ludbrook will serve as producers.
This third Tron film has been in the works for some time, and was said to have Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde return as Sam Flynn and Quorra, respectively, before it was canceled in 2015. It was also said that Disney was interested in Leto at the time.
In 2017, a Tron reboot starring Leto was said to be in development and, in 2020, Lion director Garth Davis was attached to direct.
Leto himself recently starred as Dr. Michael Morbius in Morbius and as Adam Neumann in WeCrashed. He is currently working on Haunted Mansion for Disney.
While it may take some time for Tron: Ares to make it to theaters, fans will be able to enter the Grid and ride Tron: Lightcycle/Run at Disney World on April 4, 2023, and play Tron: Identity - a detective game set thousands of years after Tron: Legacy - later this year or next.
