She-Hulk: Attorney at Law creator Jessica Gao has revealed that her original pitch for the Disney+ series featured The Leader from the upcoming Captain America 4.

While speaking to ComicBook.com about her initial plans for She-Hulk, Gao admitted that she had included Samuel Sterns aka The Leader as "an option" for one of the villains in the series. She explained that she had put the idea on the table very early on, but it ultimately ended up being "scrapped" for reasons that she can no longer recall.

"In my original pitch, I did have The Leader in there," Gao told the outlet. "Just as an option, as a suggestion, you know? But really, I can't remember why [it was scrapped]. I don't remember if it was organically taken out, because we just came up with other stuff, or if we were told no. I honestly don't remember."

2008's The Incredible Hulk set up The Leader as a future MCU villain, prompting some fans to speculate about the return of Tim Blake Nelson's character and whether he could possibly make an appearance in She-Hulk before going on to serve as the main villain of Captain America: New World Order, 14 years after his original MCU debut.

There was some evidence to support that theory, especially after the Wrecking Crew showed up in Episode 3. Those villains tried (very unsuccessfully) to steal a sample of Jen Walters' blood for their mysterious benefactor, rousing suspicions over whether that could be The Leader given his interest in gamma science, but it never came to pass.

"There was thought about either bringing him back or doing some version of a new version of Leader, or some relation to him," Gao said, admitting that they had at one time considered bringing him into the show's fold. "But, I mean truly, this was three years ago, and the show has evolved so much that I don't remember what actually happened."

Captain America: New World Order is coming on May 3, 2024, and marks Anthony Mackie's first time in the role following the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Nigerian-American filmmaker Julius Onah will direct the film while the script is being handled by The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's head writer and creator Malcolm Spellman.
