Earlier this year, LEGO increased the MSRP of many of its popular building kits. Unfortunately, that included the LEGO Ideas Treehouse (21318). Originally listed at $200, it suffered a $50 "readjustment" that bought the price up to $250. Even with the premium, this was a pretty decent value as far as LEGOs go, since the cost-per-brick was still under 10 cents. Today, though, there's a rare opportunity to pick this set up for even less than the original MSRP. Right now Amazon has it for $175, which is actually the lowest price we have ever seen for this set, even before the price hike.
LEGO Ideas Treehouse 21318 3,036-Piece Building Kit
If you're familiar with the popular LEGO Bonsai kit, think of the Treehouse as a supersized version of it. This 3,036 piece set measures an impressive 14" x 10" x 9" and weighs in at over 8 pounds. This is a rather complex build that's intended for an older audience (16+). At first glance you might just see a majestic tree, but there's definitely more than meets the eye here. The fully landscaped base features a complete picnic setup next to a buildable stream, The treehouse itself comprises of three separate cabins, each with removable rooftops and fully decorated interiors. There's even a windup crane for hauling goods up to the treetop. A full set of both green and yellow leaves are included to mimic your choice of season. And in keeping with the whole "green nature" aspect of this build, all the plant and tree elements are made of a plant-based plastic.
We're not sure how long this deal will stick around for, but it's still currently $249.99 at the LEGO Shop. The LEGO Ideas line of kits have always been one of our favorites because of the diversity of the designs, the complexity of the builds, and the scale of the finished products. The fun doesn't stop when your build is finished, either. The LEGO Treehouse is definitely more play-friendly than the other LEGO sets that are designed to be hands-off art pieces, like the LEGO Star Wars UCS, Architecture, or Art series.
