All Upcoming Video Game Movies and TV Shows: 2022 Release Dates and Beyond

With the Uncharted movie finally here, Fallout getting a TV series on Amazon and Netflix developing a Cyberpunk 2077 anime, a Tomb Raider anime, and now a Bioshock movie, we thought it would be a good time to revisit the list of all the other video game movies and TV projects that have been announced, planned, or are currently in production right now.

How many will actually make it through development and see the light of day remains to be seen, and only a fraction of these have actual release dates. But we're watching these projects, and we're tracking them!

For the purposes of this list, we classify a “video game movie” as an actual film adaptation of an existing video game, so something like Wreck-It Ralph (which is just a movie about video games) wouldn’t qualify. They don’t have to be faithful adaptations – they just have to be based on a real game.

Click on through the slideshow below for a glimpse, or read on! And if you see something incorrect, missing, or in need of an update, let us know in the comments!

Here are the most definite projects that are currently in the works:

Uncharted

Release Date: February 18, 2022

Sony's Uncharted movie has gained and lost six directors since being announced in 2009. The good news is the final film is finally here. The movie is directed by Venom's Ruben Fleischer and stars Tom Holland as Nathan Drake and former Drake frontrunner Mark Wahlberg as the hero's mentor Sully. One of the trailers for Uncharted features a key set piece from Uncharted 3, despite the movie being designed as a prequel/origin story for Drake.

Halo

Release Date: March 24, 2022

While a planned movie adaptation of the original Halo never materialized, the franchise is now being adapted as a TV series at Paramount+ (after migrating from Showtime). The Wire's Pablo Schreiber has been cast as Master Chief, while Otto Bathurst (Peaky Blinders) will direct and produce the series. Kyle Killen (Lone Star) and Steven Kane (The Last Ship) are the showrunners on Season 1. However, both will exit the series after the first season. A second season has already been greenlit.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Release Date: April 8, 2022

As one of the few box office successes of the pandemic-ravaged 2020, it's no surprise Sonic the Hedgehog is getting a sequel. The sequel will again be directed by Jeff Fowler and will feature returning stars Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Jim Carrey as Dr. Eggman and James Marsden as Tom Wachowski. Idris Elba has been cast as the voice of Knuckles, and Sonic's pal Miles "Tails" Prowler will also be on hand, and voiced by the games' voice actress Colleen O'Shaughnessey.

Untitled Mario Movie

Release Date: December 21, 2022

After years of seeming like little more than a pipe dream, the Mario movie is actually happening. What's more, Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt is voicing Mario. The cast also includes Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. Longtime Mario voice actor Charles Martinet will appear, though he'll be playing a number of unknown cameo roles this time. The animated movie doesn't yet have an official title, but it does have a release date - December 21, 2022.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Release Date: 2022

Netflix is moving forward with an anime series tie-in to Cyberpunk 2077. CD Projekt Red will act as producer on the series, with Studio Trigger working as the animation studio, and Hiroyuki Imaishi (Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill, Promare) directing. Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka will compose the score.

The Last of Us

Release Date: 2023

The Last of Us movie is in “development hell”, according to the game’s director Neil Druckmann, who wrote the original script for Screen Gems. In 2018 Druckmann said that if it ever went ahead, he hopes that the studio doesn’t use his script.

Instead, HBO is adapting The Last of Us as a series, with Chernobyl's Craig Mazin overseeing the project and Druckmann both writing and producing. The Mandalorian's Pedro Pascal will star as Joel, and Game of Thrones' Bella Ramsey stars as Ellie. The 10-episode first season will adapt the first game, but it will "deviate greatly" in some of its episodes.

Untitled Knuckles Series

Release Date: 2023

Knuckles from Sonic the Hedgehog will get his own series on Paramount+, with Idris Elba reprising his voice role from Sonic 2. The series will be live-action and hit in 2023.

Minecraft: The Movie

Release Date: TBA

Peter Sollett (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist) are directing the Minecraft movie, which will tell the story of a teenage girl trying to save the Overworld from an Ender Dragon. The film was scheduled for release in March 2022, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic has now been indefinitely delayed.

Tomb Raider 2 & Anime Series

Release Date: TBA

Despite mediocre reviews for 2018's Tomb Raider, MGM and Warner Bros. seem happy enough with the film's box office performance to move forward with a sequel, with Alicia Vikander returning as Lara Croft. At one point the sequel had a March 2021 release date, but with Lovecraft Country showrunner Misha Green coming aboard as writer and director in January 2021, it became clear Tomb Raider 2 wouldn't be releasing before 2022 at the earliest. Vikander later told Collider she's confident the sequel will happen, even though it hasn't been officially greenlit yet. The tentative title for the film is Tomb Raider: Obsidian.

Separately, Netflix is developing a Tomb Raider anime series set within the universe of the reboot games (specifically, after the events of 2018's Shadow of the Tomb Raider). However, Agent Carter's Hayley Atwell will voice Lara rather than the game's voice actress Camilla Luddington.

Pokemon: Detective Pikachu 2 & Pokemon Live-Action Series

Release Date: TBA

Legendary Pictures announced a sequel to Detective Pikachu in January 2019, two months before the original hit theaters. While there's been little news since, the strong performance of the first movie gives us no reason to assume the sequel isn't still a top priority. 22 Jump Street's Oren Uziel is penning the screenplay.

Meanwhile, Netflix is reportedly developing a live-action Pokemon series from Joe Henderson (Almost Human). No other details are available on the series at this time.

Borderlands

Release Date: TBA

The Borderlands movie was announced back in 2016, to be produced by Avi and Ari Arad and written by Aaron Berg. While news was slow for several years after that, Lionsgate surprised fans in February 2020 by announcing Hostel's Eli Roth will direct the movie, with Chernobyl's Craig Mazin penning a new screenplay draft. Cate Blanchett has been confirmed to star as Lilith, and Kevin Hart will also star as Roland. The cast also includes Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Florian Munteanu as Kreig, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, and Jack Black as Claptrap. Production has officially ended for the Borderlands movie, making a 2022 release likely.

BioShock

Release Date: TBA

There's always a lighthouse, and apparently there's always a BioShock adaptation in the works. After a previous attempt to bring the beloved first-person shooter to film form fell apart at Universal years ago, Netflix and Take-Two announced in early 2022 that a BioShock film adaptation is in the works for the streaming service. Plans for it have reportedly been in the works for a year, but no writer or filmmaker is currently attached to it.

The Witcher: Season 3

Release Date: TBA

Netflix's Henry Cavill-starring fantasy series will return for a third season of adventures.

In addition to that, a second anime movie is in the works (the first was The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf) as is a family-friendly series, though details on those projects are scant for now.

The Witcher: Blood Origin

Release Date: TBA

The Witcher: Blood Origin is a new spin-off prequel series set in the same world as The Witcher. The series will look at a period 1,200 years before The Witcher's protagonist Geralt of Rivia walked the lands of the Northern Kingdoms. This series will focus on how the first Witcher was created and is planned as a six-part live-action show from original series' showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, and Declan de Barra, who wrote the Season 1 episode "Of Banquets, Bastards and Burials." Sophia Brown (Giri/Haji) stars as Éile alongside Laurence O'Fuarin (Vikings) and Michelle Yeoh (Star Trek: Discovery), who will play Fjall and Scían respectively.

Arcane: Season 2

Release Date: TBA

The popular animated series based on League of Legends will return, as will Hailee Steinfeld's Vi, Ella Purnell's Jinx, and Katie Leung's Caitlyn Kiramman.

Assassin's Creed

Release Date: TBA

Netflix has announced that it will produce a live-action Assassin's Creed series, executive produced by Ubisoft's Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik, which will be the first of multiple new projects. The live-action series will be an "epic, genre-bending live action adaptation." The collaboration will "tap into the iconic video game’s trove of dynamic stories" to create live-action, animated and anime series.

Resident Evil

Release Date: TBA

A live-action Resident Evil TV show is coming to Netflix, with Ella Balinska, Tamara Smart, Siena Agudong, Adeline Rudolph, Paola Núñez, and Lance Reddick starring. Netflix describes the show as being set “nearly three decades after the discovery of the T-virus [when] an outbreak reveals the Umbrella Corporation’s dark secrets.”
