Mortal Kombat II is now available to rent or buy from PVOD platforms like Prime Video. The move to digital comes almost exactly four weeks after the film’s initial release in theaters.
Despite a somewhat soft box office performance, critics have had generally more praise for the film than its predecessor, with IGN’s own Max Scoville acknowledging that, “the bar for video game movie sequels isn’t very high, but this one not only clears the bar, it twirls it around like a bo staff.”
If you’re itching for a rewatch or just not interested in making the hike to the movie theater, here’s everything we know about the film’s release on digital, streaming, and Blu-ray.
Mortal Kombat II Lands on Digital Four Weeks After Releasing in Theaters
Mortal Kombat II is available to rent for $19.99 or purchase for $24.99. If you choose to rent the movie, you’ll have 48 hours from the time you hit play to watch it. If you go for the digital purchase, you’ll also get access to extras like a deep dive into the gaming franchise with one of its creators, Ed Boon. Prime Video is also offering a digital bundle of both Mortal Kombat films for $29.99.
Mortal Kombat II picks up after the 2021 reboot as a group of new and returning fighters prepare for the 10th tournament between the Outworld and Earthrealm. Most of the main cast reprised their original roles, while new additions include Adeline Rudolph as Kitana and Karl Urban as Johnny Cage.
The sequel has generally been better received than the first movie, with some critics attributing this shift to director Simon McQuoid’s willingness to lean into the ‘silliness’ of the source material. That said, the movie has struggled at the box office against fellow sequel, The Devil Wears Prada 2, and breakout horror hits like Backrooms and Obsession. The film recently crossed over $128 million worldwide, and was reportedly produced on a budget of $80 million.
Screenwriter Jeremy Lin already confirmed that he was writing the script for a third movie at New York Comic Con, but an official greenlight is likely dependent on how Warner Bros. feels about the overall performance of Mortal Kombat II.
In the meantime, yet another studio is vying for the attention and approval of fighting game fans. A new Street Fighter movie is set to be released in theaters this October, and the cast has certainly enjoyed playing up their rivalry with the Mortal Kombat crew.
Streaming Release Date TBA, Blu-ray Releasing July 18
Mortal Kombat II will land on HBO Max later this year. While Warner Bros. hasn’t announced an exact streaming release date, if it follows a similar timeline to the first movie, the Mortal Kombat sequel should be available for HBO Max subscribers to stream by early August.
The movie is also available to preorder on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K, with a release date of July 18.
